tudors
After graduating from CalArts in 2008 I was given the opportunity to work on renovations, repairs and miscellaneous jobs on a Bel Air estate. It was right across the street from the Regan compound off Saint Cloud. It is said that the Regans changed the address from 666 to 669. My teacher and friend John Mandel hooked me up with the gig. At times I probably took more photos of things than I should around the property, but they were always pertaining to repairs and things noticeably in flux in relationship to the site. I retrieved a lot of cool stuff gifted to me as well or at least through work that I had already done. A never before played Smith’s The Queen is Dead album and a Weather Master Ludwig Drum Set were a couple of the special ones. Below are a couple of shots of the house itself, which isn’t a real tudor of course, as well as some interior and landscape shots. Also included is a series of other “tudors” located in a wonderful area of Garden City, NY. While shooting the series I was stopped by a woman who asked me why I was taking photos of “our” homes. I told her I worked on a tudor and I enjoy the way they all resemble it and each other very much. There’s something I really like about the facade of these things. Meaning all of these houses look pretty much the same, but are obviously not and very different inside and out. The heart of the project really addresses the domestic and labor oriented interests in my practice, mainly in that I’m using the everyday to make art on a domestic site of occupation and influence.
