Collection and Exhibition Project with Collector Diana Zlotnick, February 2009
“The Past, Present and Future Done Here/ The Father, Son and Holy Ghost is an examination of societal modernization integrated into visual art works that will be presented in conjunction with a curatorial presentation of works by Raymond Pettibon, John Baldessari and Christopher Burden. The information here ranges from referencing my father’s profession as an auto refinisher, American modernization of various technologies to natural disasters and car wrecks attached to sculpture, video, furniture and paintings. I’m interested in visual art’s ability to present order through what I view as natural or practical sensibilities akin to a modernization that is obviously still influenced by disorder in everyday reality. The curatorial work acts as a reference to the historical usage and presentations by these particular artists of pop culture, society and performance, which has continued to propel contemporary art into a re-modernization if you will. I think it’s fair to say that an evolvement of artists today as well as curators, collectors and dealers is connected to something relative to these notions of modernity and moving forward. The project itself hints at this generalization through Diana’s generosity of allowing me to curate part of her collection as a conceptual artwork as well as the presentation of a recent collected piece of my own by Raymond Pettibon to be presented similarly. Mostly this project acts as a proposal for validating current presentations of modernism artistically that are influenced socially, while also proposing a equalization of the variable roles that operate the art world.”
